Counsel to Texas since 1927

The firm Texas grew up with.

For one hundred years, McGinnis Lochridge has stood beside the people who built this state: its producers, its landowners, its rivers, its businesses. We try their cases, close their deals, and handle the regulatory work in between. Our second century starts the same way our first one did. At work.

Our First Century

A hundred years is not a slogan. It is a record.

From a solo practice in the Littlefield Building to four offices across Texas, the through line has never changed: hard problems in oil and gas, water, land, and business, handled in the courtroom and at the closing table. The full story lives on its own page.

1927

Judge Ben Powell opens his Austin practice

Fresh from the Commission of Appeals, Powell hangs a shingle in the Littlefield Building at 6th and Congress. From month one, the docket is oil and gas regulation before the Texas courts and the Railroad Commission.

1934

Senator Alvin Wirtz joins; the water practice is born

Wirtz, who wrote the legislation creating the Lower Colorado River Authority, moves to Austin and organizes Powell, Wirtz, Rauhut & Gideon. Oil, gas, and water law, from the very beginning.

1965

McGinnis, Lochridge & Kilgore takes its name

Congressman Joe Kilgore joins Bob McGinnis and Lloyd Lochridge as a name partner. McGinnis later leads the Prudhoe Bay ownership arbitration, more than two billion dollars in reserves at stake, and wins everything his clients sought.
